Self-reflection – A journey towards a democratic teacher ethos and a democratic culture in schools
In order to develop a democratic culture of teaching and learning in a school, teachers need more than just subject-matter expertise for their subjects. This self-reflection guide is intended to support educators in developing their own competences in relation to a democratic culture and a “democratic professional ethos”.
For a ‘democratic teacher’ also needs to develop their own democratic competences in order to then be able to promote them in young people, such as – to name but a few – the ability to listen to learners, colleagues and parents, openness to the cultural affiliations and practices they bring to the educational process, and empathy and responsibility for the well-being and empowerment of all learners.
The Teacher Reflection Tool provides guidance for this development process and for working with the Council of Europe’s Reference Framework of Competences for Democratic Culture (RFCDC). The tool can be used as a means of getting to know the RFCDC, but it can also be used as a companion for reflection on teaching and democratic competences.
